Apple is beginning to lean harder on iPhone users who have stayed on iOS 18, shifting the Software Update interface to make iOS 26.1 the primary, recommended upgrade. Until now, iOS 26 appeared as an optional update tucked beneath the standard iOS 18 updates, a layout that let hesitant users avoid the latest version without friction. With this change, Apple is still allowing people to remain on iOS 18, but the company is clearly nudging more devices toward the new release.
This type of push isn’t new. Since iOS 15, Apple has offered a grace period where users can remain on the previous major version while still receiving security patches. But that option is always temporary. Today’s shift positions iOS 18 updates at the bottom of the Software Update panel, a subtle but familiar precursor to the eventual removal of the older branch altogether. When that happens, devices capable of running iOS 26 will see only the newer OS offered; the previous version will stop receiving ongoing security fixes for hardware that supports the upgrade.
Some users have been reluctant to install iOS 26 due to the Liquid Glass design overhaul, which brings substantial interface changes to the iPhone. Apple’s updated software-screen layout is likely aimed at boosting adoption now that the release has been in the wild for several months. The company hasn’t yet published official iOS 26 installation numbers — those typically arrive early in the new year — so it’s unclear what the adoption curve looks like relative to earlier releases.
As always, once users upgrade to iOS 26, there’s no way to roll back to iOS 18. Apple does not support downgrading between major OS versions, which makes the timing of the upgrade important for those who want to be certain they’re ready for the new interface and features.
For now, iOS 18 users can continue receiving security updates, but that window is narrowing. Devices unable to run iOS 26 will still receive iOS 18 patches, but supported iPhones will eventually have to transition if they want ongoing security and compatibility support.
