Apple has released iOS 18.5 and iPadOS 18.5, marking the fifth official updates to its current-generation mobile operating systems. Available now for compatible iPhones and iPads, the update arrives just over a month after iOS 18.4 and continues Apple’s incremental rollout of smaller feature refinements and bug fixes before its expected pivot to iOS 19 next month at WWDC.
Though not a major overhaul, iOS 18.5 introduces a handful of meaningful updates. Notably, the software adds enhanced parental controls to Screen Time. Parents will now receive notifications when the Screen Time passcode is used on a child’s device—an added layer of oversight that could help address longstanding concerns about unauthorized passcode sharing or circumvention.
Another key feature is the expansion of satellite capabilities. For the first time, iPhone 13 models now support carrier-based satellite functionality. While Apple previously rolled out Emergency SOS via satellite on newer devices, this update reflects the growing integration of satellite tech into more routine communications. Users will need to consult their carrier for details on regional availability and supported features.
The update also includes a new Pride Harmony wallpaper. Meanwhile, users of the Apple TV app on third-party devices can now make purchases directly via Buy with iPhone—a small but notable improvement in Apple’s multi-device experience.
Additional fixes target lingering bugs, including an issue where the Apple Vision Pro app might display a black screen, now resolved in this release.
The full update is available through Settings > General > Software Update for all eligible iPhones and iPads. Those who had the iOS 18.5 release candidate installed will still see a final update due to a slight build number change (22F76).
Looking ahead, Apple’s focus will shift toward iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, which are expected to be previewed at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. However, an iOS 18.6 release is still on the horizon, with plans to bring Apple Intelligence features to users in China—a move that suggests ongoing refinement of AI integrations across markets.
For now, iOS 18.5 delivers modest but useful upgrades, particularly for families, satellite-enabled users, and anyone following Apple’s seasonal customization trends.
