Apple has released the third developer betas of iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4, continuing its testing cycle just one week after seeding the second round. The latest builds are currently available to registered developers through the Software Update section in the Settings app on compatible devices.
As with most mid-cycle updates, iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 focus on feature refinements and ecosystem adjustments rather than major interface overhauls. Several additions have surfaced across the first three betas, although Apple has not confirmed which features will remain in the final public release.
One of the more notable changes appears in Apple Podcasts, where Apple is introducing expanded support for video podcasts using HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). The company says the move will give creators more flexibility over distribution and monetization, while aiming to maintain consistent streaming quality for viewers. Video podcasting has become increasingly common across platforms, and Apple’s deeper integration suggests a push to keep creators within its ecosystem.
Cross-platform messaging is also under testing. The iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and macOS Tahoe 26.4 betas include groundwork for more secure messaging between Android and iOS devices. While details remain limited, the change reflects ongoing industry pressure to improve interoperability and messaging standards between competing mobile platforms.
On the iPad side, iPadOS 26.4 restores the compact Safari tab bar option, a design preference that had previously been removed. The same option appears in macOS Tahoe 26.4, suggesting Apple is responding to user feedback regarding tab management and screen space.
Security adjustments are also part of the update. Beginning with iOS 26.4, Stolen Device Protection is enabled by default for all iPhone users. The feature adds additional authentication requirements in scenarios where a device may have been physically stolen, reinforcing Apple’s broader push toward device-level safeguards.
Within Apple Music, a new Playlist Playground feature allows users to generate playlists using text-based prompts, reflecting the growing integration of AI-assisted tools across Apple’s apps. A Concerts Near You section has also been added, surfacing local tour dates for artists users follow.
Other interface changes include new animations in Messages, a redesigned Apple Account hub replacing the older profile layout, and an Ambient Music widget for the Home and Lock Screen with built-in sound categories such as sleep and productivity. The Wallpaper Gallery has been updated with a revised layout, and similar design changes appear in the Watch Face Gallery inside the Apple Watch app. The Reminders app gains an Urgent section, while Freeform Creator Studio subscribers receive additional tools within Freeform.
As with all beta software, these features remain subject to change. Apple may adjust, delay, or remove elements before the public release of iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4. A public beta is expected to follow developer testing in the coming days.
Apple continues to advise users against installing beta software on primary devices, recommending that testing be limited to secondary hardware due to potential bugs and performance issues.
