Apple confirms September 15 release for iOS 26, macOS 26, and more

Amid the headline announcements at Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event, the company quietly confirmed the release date for its latest operating systems. iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 Tahoe, watchOS 26, visionOS 26, and tvOS 26 will all roll out on Monday, September 15. That timing means older iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Watches will receive the update several days before the iPhone 17 lineup officially goes on sale September 19.

These software versions were first previewed at Apple’s WWDC in June, where the company introduced “Liquid Glass” — a new design language that unifies the interface across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. Liquid Glass applies translucent, refractive layers to system elements such as app icons, widgets, and controls, intended to draw more attention to content while giving the OS a more dynamic look. The aesthetic has drawn comparisons to Microsoft’s Aero Glass interface from Windows Vista, though Apple faced criticism when the design was first shown, leading to refinements in later betas.

The naming convention is another notable change. Instead of the expected incremental updates — iOS 19 and macOS 15, for example — Apple has aligned all platforms under the version number 26. While the company has not given a detailed explanation, the shift appears to be an attempt at consistency across devices and to mark a larger generational jump in design and feature integration.

For developers and beta testers, Apple has already seeded the Release Candidate builds of the new software, which are typically identical to the versions released to the public. Device compatibility lists have been published on Apple’s site, ensuring users can check whether their current hardware will support the update before it arrives.

By pushing the operating systems live ahead of its new hardware, Apple is setting the stage for a smoother transition, ensuring that existing users can experience the refreshed software environment immediately, while early adopters of the iPhone 17 family will start with iOS 26 preinstalled.
