Apple has quietly rolled out an update to its iCloud Passwords extension, expanding its support to include the Firefox web browser on Windows PCs. This update arrives several months after Apple acquired a popular iCloud Passwords extension for Firefox back in December 2024, which at the time only offered compatibility with macOS.
Previously, Windows users could use iCloud Passwords with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, allowing them to autofill login details saved in their Apple Keychain. The addition of Firefox support on Windows now brings that same seamless convenience to a wider group of users, enabling them to access passwords, login credentials, and other saved information without needing to switch browsers or manually copy details from their iPhone or Mac.
For those unfamiliar, iCloud Passwords allows Apple device owners to store and sync their passwords across iPhone, iPad, and Mac via iCloud Keychain. With the Windows extension installed, this password management system integrates into web browsers by displaying a pop-up prompt when users attempt to log in to websites or services. The updated extension now works in Firefox alongside its existing support for Chrome and Edge, filling a gap left by the absence of Safari for Windows in recent years.
To use the feature, Windows users need to have the iCloud for Windows app installed on their device, in addition to adding the iCloud Passwords extension from the official Firefox Browser Add-Ons page. Once set up, the extension automatically detects login fields and offers to fill them with stored credentials from iCloud Keychain, streamlining workflows for users who navigate between Apple and Windows ecosystems.
This move highlights Apple’s ongoing efforts to keep its services accessible even outside its own hardware and software platforms, catering to users who prefer cross-platform workflows. The expansion also increases Firefox’s appeal as a browser choice for Apple device owners on Windows, reducing friction in accessing secure logins and aligning more closely with the experience available to Safari users on macOS and iOS.
As the competition between password managers intensifies, Apple’s decision to expand iCloud Passwords’ compatibility could encourage greater reliance on its integrated ecosystem while simplifying security management for users. Whether it will expand to support additional browsers or platforms in the future remains to be seen, but this update marks a meaningful step towards cross-platform parity.
