Apple bets on on-device AI for faster, more private user experience

While Apple has been slower to release public-facing generative AI features compared to its competitors, the company is making major strides with its upcoming iOS 18 update. Apple is reportedly developing large language models (LLM) designed to run directly on iPhones, bypassing cloud-based processing for enhanced privacy and responsiveness.

This on-device approach will make AI features accessible across a wider range of iPhones, not just the latest premium models. While this strategy could limit the capabilities of Apple’s AI compared to cloud-based solutions, it prioritizes user security and immediate response times.

Industry analyst Mark Gurman reports this strategy aligns with Apple’s recent development patterns. While still under development, this shift suggests AI-powered enhancements for Siri and potential integration within apps to create a smoother user experience.
