Anthropic’s Claude sees rise in paid users amid growing AI demand

Anthropic’s Claude is seeing a clear rise in paid consumer adoption, shaped by a combination of product expansion, public visibility, and a broader shift toward paid AI tools. Recent transaction analysis from Indagari, based on anonymized data from around 28 million U.S. consumers, suggests that subscriptions to Claude have increased sharply in early 2026 .

The data, while substantial, comes with limitations. It does not account for enterprise customers — a significant part of Anthropic’s business — nor does it include free-tier users. Total user estimates remain inconsistent, ranging widely, and the company has not disclosed official figures. However, Anthropic has confirmed that its paid subscriptions have more than doubled this year, indicating strong momentum in its consumer segment.

Much of this growth appears concentrated in the lower-cost Pro plan, priced at $20 per month. This suggests that many users are experimenting with paid access rather than committing to more expensive tiers. The increase in both new and returning subscribers between January and February points to a broader pattern: users are not only trying Claude, but coming back to it after initial use.

Several factors help explain the timing of this surge. A set of high-profile advertising campaigns earlier in the year increased general awareness of Claude. At the same time, Anthropic’s public dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense drew additional attention. The disagreement focused on restrictions around how AI systems could be used, particularly in military and surveillance contexts. As the situation became more visible — including public statements and legal developments — interest in Claude rose, with a noticeable spike in new users during that period.

Product development has also contributed to the increase. New tools such as Claude Code and Claude Cowork, introduced in January, are aimed at developers and productivity use cases. More recently, a “computer use” feature has expanded Claude’s capabilities by allowing it to interact with a computer interface — performing actions like clicking, scrolling, and executing tasks. These features are limited to paid users, which likely supports the rise in subscriptions rather than just free usage.

Despite this growth, Claude remains behind ChatGPT in overall consumer scale. Available data indicates that OpenAI continues to add paid users at a steady rate, maintaining its lead in the market. Still, the gap does not diminish the broader trend: consumers are increasingly willing to pay for AI tools that offer practical value.

This shift reflects a more mature phase for generative AI. Early experimentation is giving way to more deliberate usage, where users evaluate which platforms are worth ongoing costs. Claude’s recent gains suggest it is finding a place within that transition, though its long-term position will depend on how consistently it can deliver useful features beyond short-term spikes in attention.
