Anthropic doubles Claude usage limits during off-peak hours for two weeks

Anthropic is temporarily increasing the usage limits of its AI chatbot Claude as the company responds to a noticeable rise in demand for the service. For a two-week period, users will be able to send more prompts and run more tasks with the chatbot during certain hours without upgrading their subscription plans.

The promotion runs from March 13 through March 27 and applies to most of Claude’s user tiers. People on Free, Pro, Max, and Team plans will automatically receive double their usual usage limits when using Claude during designated off-peak hours. Anthropic says the feature activates automatically, meaning users do not need to adjust any settings or opt in to take advantage of the offer.

The expanded limits apply specifically outside of the weekday window between 8 AM and 2 PM Eastern Time, a period that typically sees the highest usage levels. By encouraging activity during quieter hours, the company is likely trying to balance server demand while giving users additional room to experiment with the system.

Anthropic says the promotion works across nearly all of the company’s platforms. The doubled limits apply when Claude is accessed through its web interface, desktop applications, and mobile apps. The change also extends to several productivity integrations built around the model. These include Cowork, Claude Code, Claude for Excel, and Claude for PowerPoint, which allow users to run prompts and automate tasks inside work environments.

The company has run similar promotions before. In late December, Anthropic briefly doubled usage limits for certain paid plans during the holiday period. That earlier event was restricted mainly to higher-tier subscribers, such as those on the Max 5x and Max 20x plans. The current offer expands eligibility much further, including the free tier and several team-based subscriptions. The only users excluded from the new promotion are Enterprise customers.

Anthropic frames the initiative as a gesture toward the growing community around its chatbot, describing the promotion as a way to thank people who are increasingly using Claude in everyday tasks. In practice, it also reflects the competitive pressure among major AI providers as they try to attract and retain users in a rapidly expanding market.

The announcement arrives during a period of heightened attention around the company. Anthropic has recently been involved in a dispute related to a U.S. Department of Defense contract. Reports indicate the company declined requests to remove certain safety mechanisms from its AI systems. As a result, Anthropic was reportedly categorized as a supply chain risk by the agency and lost its contract with the department.

Following that development, OpenAI reportedly secured a deal with the Department of Defense. The situation has generated discussion within the AI community, with some users expressing support for Anthropic’s stance and exploring alternatives to competing chatbots.

The timing of the new promotion suggests the company may be trying to build momentum while interest in Claude is high. Increasing usage limits allows more experimentation with features such as coding assistance, document analysis, and productivity workflows without immediately pushing users toward paid upgrades.

Promotions like this can also help companies stress-test infrastructure by encouraging activity across different times of day. If successful, Anthropic may gather valuable data about usage patterns while strengthening user engagement.

With the current offer scheduled to end on March 27, it remains unclear whether the company will extend the promotion or introduce similar incentives in the future. However, the move highlights how quickly the competition between AI chatbot platforms is evolving as providers compete for attention, developer adoption, and enterprise customers.
