Amazon has begun rolling out Alexa+, its upgraded AI assistant, to the Amazon Music app on iOS and Android. The feature, available across all subscription tiers but currently limited to Alexa+ Early Access users, represents the company’s latest effort to make music discovery more interactive and conversational.
Within the app, users can tap the “a” button in the lower right corner and ask questions directly through the phone’s microphone. Unlike earlier versions of Alexa, which responded mostly to short commands, Alexa+ is designed for natural back-and-forth dialogue. It can answer specific music-related questions, such as identifying a song from remembered lyrics, explaining an artist’s influences, or recalling which movie a track appeared in.
The assistant also extends to deeper personalization. Listeners can request curated playlists based on mood, decade, or activity — for instance, asking for “2010s hits that keep me moving fast, starting with a track from Nicki Minaj.” Amazon says Alexa+ can even handle creative or humorous prompts, such as suggesting songs that would “make me seem cool to my 13-year-old daughter.”
Alexa+ was first introduced in February at Amazon’s hardware event as part of the company’s broader AI strategy. Beyond music, the assistant is capable of performing practical actions like booking restaurants and ordering groceries. Though still in limited release, Amazon reports that early adopters of Alexa+ on Amazon Music explore songs three times more frequently than users with the standard Alexa, and those asking for recommendations are listening to nearly 70% more music overall.
This expansion arrives as major streaming services increasingly integrate AI into their platforms. Spotify, for example, recently introduced ChatGPT-based recommendation tools. By embedding Alexa+ directly into its music ecosystem, Amazon is positioning itself to compete more aggressively on personalized discovery and engagement.
Amazon Music has already been experimenting with several AI-driven features, including automatically generated playlists, AI-assisted search, and an “Explore” mode that helps users learn more about artists and tracks. The arrival of Alexa+ adds another layer to that strategy — one focused on conversation as a gateway to deeper, more personalized listening experiences.
