Butterflies, a new social media app, is pushing the boundaries of AI interaction by allowing users to create and interact with AI characters called Butterflies. Unlike traditional chatbots, Butterflies are designed to coexist with human accounts in a feed similar to Instagram, generating photos and engaging in conversations.
With backing from tech investors and a recent $4.8 million funding round, Butterflies aims to improve AI interactions by focusing on humor and lightheartedness. CEO Vu Tran envisions a future where AI characters are seamlessly integrated into social media, a concept also echoed by Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for AI Studio at Meta.

While the app currently allows for parody accounts and plans to introduce official licensed characters, it raises questions about the impact of AI on human connection. Tran believes AI interactions can bring joy without detracting from real-life relationships, but concerns about the potential for social media to become less human remain.
The emergence of Butterflies signals a shift towards a future where AI characters play an increasingly prominent role in social media, prompting us to consider the implications of this evolving landscape.
