AI in iOS 18: more details emerge

Apple CEO Tim Cook has hinted at upcoming AI features, and a new AppleInsider report sheds light on what they might be. A major focus will reportedly be on improving Siri, giving it the ability to analyze and summarize texts within your Messages app.

Previous reports indicated a similar “Intelligent Search” feature for the Safari browser, allowing for webpage summarization. Apple’s own large language model (LLM), named Ajax, is expected to power these features. In line with Apple’s published research, the report suggests this AI processing will prioritize on-device execution for quick responses.

For more complex requests, Ajax may need to connect with external servers. Apple is reportedly exploring partnerships with Google or OpenAI to enhance its AI capabilities.

Apple’s AI features are expected to maintain a strong emphasis on user privacy. AppleInsider reports that privacy warnings will precede any use of personal data by Ajax. During Apple’s recent earnings call, CEO Cook expressed excitement about AI and hinted at “exciting things” to come. He highlighted Apple’s unique strengths in hardware, software, and privacy integration.

While Apple’s upcoming iPad event on Tuesday likely won’t touch on AI, we can expect a deeper dive into their AI plans at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
