A Symphony of science and sound: inside Apple’s hearing health features audio lab

Apple’s commitment to innovation extends far beyond sleek design and powerful processors. Deep within the company’s Cupertino headquarters lies the Audio Lab, a state-of-the-art facility where acoustic engineers meticulously craft and refine the audio experiences for Apple’s diverse product lineup. This hub of sonic exploration played a pivotal role in the development of the groundbreaking hearing health features found in the AirPods Pro 2.

A Global Challenge: Addressing Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a widespread issue, affecting an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Recognizing the impact of this often-overlooked condition, Apple embarked on a multi-year journey to create an accessible and comprehensive hearing health solution. The result is a suite of features in AirPods Pro 2 that help users protect their hearing, assess their hearing health, and even utilize their AirPods Pro as clinical-grade hearing aids.

The Audio Lab: Where Innovation Takes Shape

The Audio Lab is a testament to Apple’s dedication to audio excellence. Within its walls, engineers conduct user studies in specialized listening rooms and leverage anechoic chambers – spaces designed to completely absorb sound reflections – to isolate and analyze audio with incredible precision.

This facility was instrumental in the development of the AirPods Pro 2’s hearing health features. Engineers utilized the lab’s unique capabilities to simulate real-world sound environments, from quiet whispers to bustling cityscapes and concert venues, ensuring that these features perform optimally in diverse situations.

Anechoic Chambers: Exploring the Nuances of Sound

The Audio Lab’s anechoic chambers are particularly remarkable. One, known as the Longwave chamber, is built on a separate foundation with spring isolation to eliminate any external noise or vibrations, allowing for incredibly accurate sound measurements. Within this chamber, engineers utilize a custom-built loudspeaker and microphone arc to study how sound interacts with the human body.

This deep understanding of sound perception is crucial for creating audio experiences that accurately reflect the user’s environment. By capturing audio from individuals wearing AirPods Pro in a rotating chair within the anechoic chamber, engineers can account for the subtle differences in how each person’s ears perceive sound.

Fantasia Lab: Recreating the World in Sound

On the other side of the Audio Lab, the Fantasia Lab takes a different approach to sound research. This space utilizes a spherical array of 50 loudspeakers to recreate hundreds of real-world sound scenes, such as bustling shopping malls, busy streets, or airplane cabins. This allows engineers to test and fine-tune features like Conversation Boost and Transparency mode in realistic scenarios.

To validate the Hearing Aid feature, the Fantasia Lab was used to conduct speech-in-noise tests with a diverse group of participants with varying degrees of hearing loss. This rigorous testing ensured that the feature would effectively help users distinguish speech from background noise in challenging environments.

Clinical-Grade Testing: Ensuring Accuracy and Reliability

The Audio Lab also houses three clinical-grade audiometric booths, similar to those found in audiologists’ offices. These booths were used to conduct thousands of hearing tests during the development of the Hearing Test feature, ensuring its accuracy and reliability.

Design: A Crucial Element in User Experience

Beyond the technical aspects, Apple also focused on the design and user experience of these hearing health features. The team sought to simplify the process of taking a hearing test and setting up the Hearing Aid feature, making it intuitive and accessible for users of all ages and technical backgrounds.

Collaboration: A Symphony of Expertise

The development of these groundbreaking hearing health features was a testament to Apple’s collaborative spirit. Teams from across the company, including software and hardware engineering, design, health, accessibility, and clinical operations, worked together to ensure the highest quality and user experience.

AirPods Pro 2: The Interface to the Ear

The end-to-end hearing health experience on AirPods Pro 2 represents Apple’s commitment to empowering users on their personal health journeys. These innovative features allow users to protect their hearing, gain insights into their hearing health, and even utilize their AirPods Pro as hearing aids, all with a seamless and intuitive experience. As Apple continues to push the boundaries of technology, the Audio Lab will undoubtedly remain a vital hub for innovation, shaping the future of sound and enhancing the lives of users worldwide.
