8BitDo previews FlipPad, a portrait-first controller for smartphone gaming

8BitDo has previewed a new smartphone controller aimed at a very specific use case: playing games exclusively in portrait orientation. The device, called the FlipPad, is positioned as an accessory for users who primarily game on their phones and prefer vertical layouts rather than traditional landscape grips.

Unlike many mobile controllers that rely on Bluetooth, the FlipPad connects directly to iOS and Android devices through a USB-C port. The controller attaches to the lower half of the phone using a hinged mechanism, giving it the look and function of a flip phone keyboard when opened. This physical design sets it apart from clamp-style or wraparound controllers, which tend to add bulk and force horizontal gameplay even when the game itself is better suited to portrait mode.

The control layout is intentionally simple and familiar. A black D-pad sits alongside red ABXY buttons, with Start and Select included in the central area. In addition, there are six white buttons placed along the top edge and the bottom corners of the controller. While 8BitDo has not detailed their exact functions, their placement suggests they are intended for customization, allowing players to map commands based on the needs of different games or apps. This could be particularly useful for mobile titles that rely heavily on touch inputs or asymmetric control schemes.

8BitDo has stated that the FlipPad is officially supported by Apple, which may indicate deeper system-level compatibility with iOS compared to generic USB-C controllers. However, no technical specifics have been shared regarding certification standards, supported games, or operating system requirements. Android support is also confirmed, though details on compatibility across devices and versions remain unclear.

The company says the FlipPad is scheduled to arrive in summer 2026, with pricing still undisclosed. Its reveal follows a separate teaser from last month, in which 8BitDo hinted at a new Pro-level controller debuting at CES 2026. That timing suggests more concrete information may surface during the Las Vegas event, including hands-on impressions or finalized specifications.

The FlipPad reflects a measured shift in how accessory makers are approaching mobile gaming. Rather than trying to replicate console controllers on smaller screens, this design acknowledges that many popular smartphone games are built around vertical play. Whether the FlipPad gains traction will likely depend on price, software support, and how well it integrates with existing mobile gaming ecosystems, but its focus on portrait mode marks a notable departure from standard controller assumptions.
