Sony WF-SP900 headphones review

Sony has recently launched the WF-SP900 Headphones which are aimed at people who are into sports and want to use them on the go. These are successor to WF-SP700. These definitely looks better than the predecessor.

Accessories:

What I especially liked about as soon as I opened the packaging is that it comes with a large number of accessories to help these fit snugly in your ears. The silicone earbuds come in four sizes, and not just that, even the arc supporters come in four sizes – S, M, L, XL – so you’re sure to get a good fit.

The WF-SP900 also come with an additional set of earbuds which are designed for swimming which provide a watertight fit. It is no surprise that these are also in the same four sizes.

In the box, they’ve also included a round-the-neck leash cord which is useful if you’re going swimming or doing activities that might involve a lot of fast movements. You can tuck the leash in your swimming goggles and you won’t have to worry about losing them at all.

Battery:

It also comes with the charging case inside it which has a nice shape with rounded corners. The battery of the WF-SP900 provides 3 hours of listening time when connected via bluetooth and 6 hours when listening to audio from the in-built memory. The battery is further extended by an additional 9 hours or 15 hours respectively if using the case to charge it.

On a related note, it comes with a proximity sensor which is pretty accurate at detecting if you’re wearing them or not. I tried to cheat it by putting my finger over it, but somehow it detected that it wasn’t the ear. When it detects that they aren’t being used, the headphones would get switched off to save power.

Storage:

It comes with 4 GB of on-board storage to store your music. Considering the fact that you might be using them while doing various activities or just on the go, the 4 GB of storage is enough and you can add/remove songs by simply connecting it to your laptop. You do not require any additional app for this to work.

Controls:

What I really liked are the controls on the headphones. If you’re new to this line-up of the Sony headphones, you might initially get confused as to how the controls work. Almost everything works by tapping them. There are a plethora of functions possible by doing so. You can adjust the volume, play/pause the song, change track, toggle ambient sound on/off, toggle bluetooth on/off, receive calls, bring up the voice assistant in your phone. That being said, it does take a couple of seconds for you to recollect how much to tap to perform what function and you might end up performing the wrong one unintentionally sometimes.

Sound:

Now let me talk about the sound which is the primary factor to consider while buying headphones. I found the sound quality of the WF-SP900 to be just acceptable. The bass was very much on the lower side, and not just that, but the volume too didn’t go all that high either. I could easily listen to music with the volume at the highest without causing any strain to my ears (which isn’t necessarily a good thing).

Underwater:

Given the IP rating, and the swimming accessories, I was tempted to wear the WF SP900 while going for a swim. On a side note, these are also salt-water resistant so you don’t have to restrict yourself to just swimming pools.

I decided to listen to the songs from the on-board storage. The capacitive control worked quite well even when under water. The swimming earbuds coupled with the water, do reduce the volume further. While swimming fast, there were a few instances where I thought that the music had stopped playing, and when I slowed down to check, it still was playing. This was with the volume at the highest.

To sum it up:

If headphones that are water resistant and have on-board storage as well as bluetooth connectivity is your priority and you aren’t too concerned with the loudness, then you should buy these.
