With Bluetooth Technology and NFC one touch pairing, the Momentum On-Ear Wireless headphones from Sennheiser is a good investment for any audio devotee. The headphones come in two colours: Black and Ivory.
My first impression of the Momentum headphones were that of a good one. Sound quality was as crisp as ever, it was fairly comfortable – but then I wore it for two hours continuously and my ears were visibly red. At first, I thought it was just me, but when other people tried them on for a while it was decided that they hurt a little more than they should. However, other than the headphones being a tad bit uncomfortable, the Momentum headphones fairs pretty well.
Design
With a much more futuristic and unique design, I think almost anyone call pull these off. I personally, cannot pull off headphones in general, but these weren’t too bad and I didn’t receive any judgemental looks from strangers.
The right ear cup features the power button that can be used to enable the Bluetooth function, a volume button, USB charging port, an AUX port if you don’t want to connect the set to your device wirelessly, as well as an airplane adapter for travel purposes. Sennheiser has also included a NoiseGuard™ hybrid which uses 4 microphones and guarantees crystal clear speech technology.
The headphones are also foldable, making it extremely easy to carry around.
Performance
The NoiseGuard™ Hybrid also promises active noise cancellation for the “ultimate isolation and outstanding audio performance”, which works for the most part. However I found that when travelling I was still able to hear everything around me. Maybe my music wasn’t loud enough to actually block out the sounds around me, but it’s not too much of an issue. The headphones really do provide an outstanding audio performance for every song you choose.
The volume control only works when using the headphones via bluetooth, which I suppose is expected. A simple flick of the button either increases or decreases the volume. Pushing the volume button down causes the music to be paused, while pushing it twice or thrice will skip to the next song and go back to the previous respectively.
Genre test
Synthpop (Magnets – Disclosure): With this track playing through the Momentum, I found that no individual element overshadowed another. The vocals were streamed smoothly with the background music and it kind of feels like you’re at a party.
Indie Pop/Rock (Speeding Cars – Walking On Cars): Listening to a slow jam with these headphones actually make you feel like you’re the main character in your very own indie movie – a very interesting and enjoyable experience.
Garage/Hard Rock (Arabella – Arctic Monkeys, Little Black Submarines – The Black Keys): I picked these two songs because they both sort of start calmly, and kick up around ten notches. I highly recommend using the Momentum to listen to music of this caliber. It’s like you have your own garage band! The guitar and drums bleed into each other flawlessly, and the headphones make you feel like you’re right there, every aspect of the instruments were clear, while the lead vocals were broadcasted without any distortion.
Electro/Progressive House (Papercut – Zedd) – I’m usually not one to listen to the genre but Zedd is an exception, especially when you have a decent pair of headphones to pair with it. Testing this song out proved that you’re going to receive a flawless and outstanding performance, no matter what genre you pick.
Battery Life
The Momentum claims to have a battery life of upto 22 hours when used wirelessly. I haven’t been able to test that out completely, but I did use it for 6 hours straight and there was still about three-quarters of the battery left. There’s even a battery symbol on your device to show you how much life is left and whether you need to charge it soon or not.
Comfort
I really hoped I wouldn’t find any negative aspect of these headphones, but I have to say that it literally hurts to wear. If you’re like me and can listen to your own music for hours on end, you need a pair of earphones/headphones that wear comfortably that you don’t need to take a break from. I took the Momentum headphones out with me for the whole day and had to take frequent breaks and let my ears breathe. Even messing around with the adjustments size-wise, it just did not help. The good do outweigh the bad though, and it could wear differently for different people.
Overall, I’d give this pair of headphones a 8/10. The sound quality is truly amazing and should definitely be invested in if able to!
