Netflix’s latest “Murder Mindfully,” is a German import that deftly blends dark humor, crime thriller tropes, and a surprising dose of mindfulness meditation. Originally titled “Achtsam Morden,” this isn’t just another procedural; it’s a darkly comedic exploration of modern anxieties and the extreme lengths we’ll go to for a little peace and quiet.

Murder Mindfully

4 out of 5
This product offers great value with impressive performance, but there are a few drawbacks to consider.
WATCH ON NETFLIX

The series centers on Björn Diemel, a defense attorney whose client list reads like a who’s who of the criminal underworld. Juggling the demands of ruthless mob bosses and a strained family life, Björn is at his wit’s end. His wife, desperate to salvage their crumbling marriage and preserve Björn’s relationship with their daughter, pushes him to attend a mindfulness seminar. But what starts as a reluctant attempt to de-stress takes a sinister turn as Björn discovers a unique application for his newfound inner peace: eliminating problems, permanently.

“Murder Mindfully” thrives on the unexpected. It’s a show that can make you chuckle at the absurdity of a mafia lawyer calmly meditating amidst the chaos of a mob hit, then gasp as that same lawyer disposes of a body with chilling efficiency. The juxtaposition of serene meditation techniques and brutal acts of violence creates a darkly humorous tone reminiscent of shows like “Barry” and “Dexter,” but with a distinctly German flavor.

One of the strengths of the series lies in its relatable protagonist. Björn is the epitome of the overwhelmed modern man, struggling to balance work, family, and his own sanity. His descent into vigilante justice, while morally questionable, stems from a relatable desire to protect his loved ones and reclaim control of his life. We might not condone his methods, but we understand his motivations.

Beyond the dark humor and thrilling plot twists, “Murder Mindfully” delves into deeper themes. It challenges viewers to confront the grey areas of morality, asking whether taking a life can ever be justified, even in the name of protecting one’s family. The show doesn’t offer easy answers, forcing us to grapple with these ethical complexities alongside the characters.

Technically, “Murder Mindfully” is a well-crafted series. The cinematography captures the stark beauty of the German landscape, while the soundtrack seamlessly blends traditional orchestral scores with contemporary electronic music. The acting is superb, with Tom Schilling (“Never Look Away”) delivering a nuanced performance as the conflicted Björn.

With its tight pacing and cliffhanger endings, “Murder Mindfully” is tailor-made for binge-watching. Clocking in at just eight half-hour episodes, it’s a perfect weekend escape that will leave you both entertained and disturbed. If you’re a fan of dark comedies with a twist, this German import is definitely worth adding to your Netflix queue.
