Merlin Magic Wave speaker review

Coming from a family that lives on music, especially with a father who is obsessed with sound systems, I’m always excited to try out new speakers. The Merlin Magic Wave is truly something that sound system enthusiasts should invest in. I’ve never been so blown away by something of such a size when it comes to speakers. Although excited, I didn’t have any expectations as I had never tried out a Merlin product before.

Build and Design:

The Magic Wave has a very minimalist design, with a sturdy build that allows it to stay in place. The subwoofer (25W) and stereo speaker (10W) can be separated, creating a portable speaker which can play endless hours of music. The stereo speaker automatically charges once magnetically placed onto the subwoofer which is connected into a power source and also has a built-in mic, letting you answer calls through the speaker itself. Using the subwoofer in tandem with the stereo speaker provides a true cinema experience. The dimensions of the subwoofer are 300mm X 144mm X 166mm, whereas the speaker is 200mm X 64mm X 60.7mm, which isn’t that heavy and relatively easy to move around.

The stereo speaker also features playback options, allowing you to control your music through the speaker itself and adjust the volume.

Sound and Performance:

For a relatively smaller size, I was impressed with the quality the Magic Wave produced. Like I said, I didn’t have any expectations beforehand. And just previously, my family had purchased a soundbar and at the time we thought it was the best piece of audio equipment we’ve ever had. We were so wrong.

The Magic Wave has a Frequency range of 20Hz – 20KHz, producing a deep bass and a listening experience like no other. The subwoofer has enough power to fill up a whole room with balanced sound, full-bodied bass tone and the richest hi-fi sound. Even at the maximum volume, the music remains to be of the highest quality, with no distortion and stays as clear as ever.

I’m someone who absolutely loves a prominent bass in any song – and the Magic Wave gives me just that. Testing out Another One Bites The Dust on this system was pure (bass) heaven. I need to give John Deacon a high-five. The Magic Wave has made every aspect of this one song so clear; the crisp vocals, heavy bass, enthralling drumline and the clear electric guitar make you feel like you’re right there at a Queen concert. And that’s one of the many things I love about this system, how it can transport me into a whole other world with just one click.

Features:

The Magic Wave features both Bluetooth and NFC connections, as well as an AUX jack and USB port, in case you prefer plugging your device in directly and saving up on some battery life. Though, the system does feature wireless Qi charging for phones that have the function, so you could wirelessly charge your phone too! The NFC function allows you to easily pair and connect NFC-enabled devices just with a simple touch, or keeping both devices in close proximity, allowing users to easily connect/disconnect to the speaker.

Final thoughts:

When I was initially drafting this review, I left the ‘Cons’ section empty and thought I’d eventually find a flaw with the Magic Wave – but here we are, at the end of the review and I still haven’t managed to find anything even remotely wrong with it. The portable and detachable stereo speaker is good by itself, but when connected to the subwoofer, it produces powerful sound, guaranteed to give users an enjoyable listening experience. It really does bring the magic back in music. Although a little pricey at $190 (AED 629), the Magic Wave is definitely a must-try product and will leave your ears happy.
