Ever wondered what a smart hair dryer would be like? Well, I for one imagined it would incorporate an AI (JARVIS maybe?) that spoke to you while you dried your hair – telling you which spots you’ve missed and whether or not you should reduce the heat on the dryer. The Dyson Supersonic does not have AI, but it’s packed with some amazing technology that really encapsulates why it costs as much as it does ($400).

Advertised as Dyson’s revolutionary hair dryer, the Dyson Supersonic has finally arrived in the Middle East and it’s here to take the beauty world by storm. Well known celebrity hair stylist Jen Atkins was present at the launch event of the hair dryer, sharing with us how much she loves the product, and how truly smart it is. Who would’ve thought a hair dryer could be smart.
Using Dyson’s own patented digital motor V9 (weighing only 49g), the hair dryer is powered by Dyson’s “smallest, lightest and most advanced digital motor”. The V9’s 13 impeller blades spin at up to 110,000rpm, generating 3.5kPa of pressure, making it up to eight times faster than other motors and half the weight. And because of it’s smaller size, the motor is located in the handle of the hair dryer itself, rather than the head – ensuring that the machine is balanced. Having the motor located in the handle also prevents your hair from being pulled into the dryer and caught in, resulting in unnecessary hair loss and a lot of discomfort.
The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer has intelligent heat control, helping to ensure hair isn’t exposed to excessive temperatures. A glass bead thermistor measures the temperature 20 times a second and transmits the data to the microprocessor, which intelligently controls the patented double-stacked heating element.
While the Dyson Supersonic does have temperature control, I did find that my hair was left feeling soft and smooth, even while using the temperature that I usually do with my regular hair dryer. My hair wasn’t as rough as it usually is (considering how I prefer to use the hottest temperature setting when drying my hair). Even while using the diffuser attachment, I noticed the lack of frizz that I would otherwise get when I use a diffuser with my previous dryer.

It is also much easier to move around your head without feeling discomfort in your arm. However, it does take roughly around the same amount of time to dry my hair (around 5 to 10 minutes), just like my previous hair dryer. I wouldn’t say it’s too much of a downside because your hair is left feeling smooth and you don’t feel like you’ve damaged your hair some more.
Settings and Attachments
“The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer has four heat settings, three airflow settings and a cold shot too”.
Along with the various temperature controls, the hair dryer comes with three magnetic attachments for all your hair styling needs. A smoothing nozzle that allows a gentle, low velocity airflow to dry and style at the same time; a Styling concentrator with fast, precise airflow for controlled styling, one section at a time; and a Diffuser that evenly disperses airflow to dry curls gently and help reduce frizz. All attachments are of course magnetic, making it extremely easy to attach to the hair dryer, and they remain cool to the touch.

Dyson has invested almost £50 million in the development of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and has used 1010 miles of human hair for testing purposes. After 4 years of development, the revolutionary hair dryer has finally reached Dubai and is sure to take the city by storm.
