I might be late to the Deezer party, but I’m definitely here to stay.
In many ways, Deezer is similar to Spotify. Granted, I’ve only managed to use Spotify for two weeks while in a different country, I have a bit of an understanding of the platform. So when a friend showed me Deezer, I instantly downloaded it.
How it works
Upon downloading the app and registering an account (either with Google or Facebook), the first 15 days gives you a free trial of their Premium service that includes no ads, unlimited amount of skips, and the ability choose whatever song you want to listen to. You even have the ability to download songs and listen to them while offline! After the 15 days are over, you lose these features unless you subscribe, but even then, a few ads can’t hurt. The music downloaded previously still remains intact, but you’re unable to access these while in “offline mode”, and you have to listen to them in a shuffled manner without the ability to pick which track you specifically want to listen to. Think of it like 8tracks – where you don’t get to choose tracks, but the app does it for you. Unless you’re super picky about this feature, it’s not going to bother you too much.
Deezer’s feature ‘Hear This’ suggests playlists/albums/tracks to you based on what you listen to! The feature also alerts you of new tracks released from artists that you’ve added to your music, something I found incredibly convenient.
The ‘Flow’ feature on Deezer curates a playlist for you that includes tracks similar to that of your favorites, as well as tracks from already added favorite artists. This is great if you’re looking to discover new music while occasionally listening to tracks you may already know and love!
Another neat way of exploring new music is to browse through playlists of your preferred genre(s). Deezer also shows you new releases from different artists, just in case you want to sift through something different. This too allows you to look through different genres.
So what makes Deezer so special to become our app of the week?
Well for one, users in the UAE can use Deezer legally and for free. Of course, there is an option to subscribe and have an ad-free, blissful experience as well. I know you’re probably going to say “But we already have Anghami!”. Anghami is great in its own way, as is Spotify. Each app has something different to offer and every user has different needs.
While Anghami allows you to listen to whatever track you want to, the music on the app is quite limited depending on the artist. I’ve found that Deezer is more up to date with the music that I specifically listen to, so I find it a better pick for myself.
An example of this is that while looking for a band called The Maine on both apps, I’ve found that Anghami only has the band’s albums up until 2013, whereas Deezer holds all of their albums.
However, as mentioned before, every app is different for every user and it all depends on what you want to listen to. I do 100% recommend giving Deezer a shot, especially if you’re looking to find new music in a rather easy manner!
Deezer is available on the App Store as well as Google Play, and is also accessible online.
