Your iPhone is NOT Risotto: Apple schools us on proper drying methods

Cell phone in rice

We’ve all done it – that terrifying moment of phone-meets-liquid catastrophe. And of course, the go-to advice from every know-it-all aunt is “Stick it in rice!” Turns out, Apple begs to differ (and I bet your local tech support person does too).

“Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone,” Apple states, shattering the sacred myth with all the warmth of a Siri notification.

Apple even addresses those of us who panicked when the dreaded liquid detection alert popped up. Apparently, hair dryers and compressed air are out. And those Q-tips you’re eyeing? No dice. Just tap your phone like you’re shaking water out of your ear, then play the waiting game in a breezy spot. (Pro tip: resist the urge to charge it right away).

Turns out, rice hasn’t been some secret weapon all these years. It’s an overrated grain with delusions of heroism. What REALLY saved your phone was likely the blissful time it spent powered down. Plus, putting it in rice means forgetting about it – so you actually give it time to dry, instead of obsessively checking it every two minutes.

Think of it this way: Apple finally revealed the real savior — patience, not pantry staples. It may lack the DIY drama of a giant bowl of rice, but hey, sometimes doing nothing is the hardest (and most helpful) part.

Apple’s support page on this matter can be found here.
