The dreaded joystick drift has plagued many PlayStation controllers, especially the PS5’s DualSense. This frustrating issue makes your character move or the camera spin uncontrollably, rendering your games unplayable. Before sending your controller for repair or replacement (which can leave you gaming-deprived for days), try these troubleshooting steps to save your joystick and your sanity.
Joystick drift occurs when your controller registers movement even though you’re not touching the analog stick. This can manifest as your in-game character constantly walking, menus scrolling on their own, or a jittery camera. Drift happens when something triggers the joystick sensors – it could be software trouble, dust, or a mechanical failure. We’ll cover fixes for the first two scenarios.
What NOT to Do
- Don’t Open Your Controller: Resist the urge to dismantle your DualSense. This voids your warranty and you probably wouldn’t have the right parts to fix a mechanical issue anyway.
- Avoid Water: Your controller is an electronic device. Don’t drench it – use small amounts of rubbing alcohol for cleaning.
Let’s Get Fixing
We’ll start with easy solutions, hopefully saving you time and hassle.
- Reset Your DualSense: Your controller has a hidden reset button. On the back, find a tiny hole and use a paperclip to gently press the button for five seconds. Reconnect your controller to your PS5 and test it out.
- Reset Bluetooth: While less common, Bluetooth interference can sometimes cause issues. Go to Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Communication Method and turn Bluetooth off briefly. Turn it back on and see if the drift persists.
- Update Your PS5 and Controller: Console and controller updates often address bugs. Make sure you’re running the latest software. Your controller will prompt for an update when hardwired to your PS5. To update your console, go to Settings > System > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software and select Update Using Internet.
- Clean Your Joysticks: Dust, grime, and even finger oils can wreak havoc under your thumbsticks. Turn off your controller and use these steps:
- Compressed Air: Give the joysticks a blast, rotating them while spraying.
- Rubbing Alcohol: Apply a small amount to a cotton swab and gently clean around the base of the stick. Let it dry.
If All Else Fails
- Return/Exchange: Try to return your controller to the retailer where you bought it, especially if you have a warranty. This is the fastest solution.
- Repair: Visit an authorized repair center link Jumbo Electronics in the UAE.
