Disney has released the first trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, an animated series set to expand one of the franchise’s longest-running antagonists. The project was first announced last year and is now confirmed to be moving forward, with the trailer offering an early look at its tone and premise. The series will stream on Disney+ and centers on Darth Maul during a period when his influence is growing beyond the shadows of the Sith hierarchy.
The trailer confirms that Sam Witwer is returning to voice Maul, continuing a role he has played across multiple animated projects. This time, the story focuses on Maul taking on a Twi’lek apprentice and instructing her in the dark side of the Force, positioning him not just as a survivor, but as an active power broker and mentor. While details remain limited, the setup suggests a more introspective look at Maul’s ambitions and methods, rather than framing him purely as a secondary villain.
Maul’s place in Star Wars history has always been unusual. He first appeared in live action in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, where he left a strong impression despite limited screen time. After killing Qui-Gon Jinn, he was seemingly defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Years later, animated storytelling revived the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, revealing that Maul survived and rebuilt himself with mechanical limbs, retaining both his physical menace and his connection to the dark side learned under Darth Sidious. A brief live-action appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Storyreinforced his ongoing role behind the scenes of galactic crime and power struggles.
The arrival of Shadow Lord is notable in a franchise that has, at times, announced projects that failed to materialize. Its relatively quick progression from announcement to trailer suggests a more focused development cycle. The series also arrives as Lucasfilm prepares its next theatrical release, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be the first live-action Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker.
Beyond Maul, Witwer’s involvement has also reignited discussion around another character closely associated with him: Starkiller from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. While Shadow Lord does not reference Starkiller, Witwer’s continued presence highlights how animated Star Wars has often served as a testing ground for deeper character exploration that live action has yet to attempt.
