Six years after its initial reveal, Hollow Knight: Silksong finally arrived earlier this year and quickly became one of the most closely watched releases in the Metroidvania space. The long development cycle did little to dampen interest. Instead, the sequel has translated sustained anticipation into strong commercial performance, with Team Cherry confirming that Hollow Knight: Silksong has sold more than seven million copies since its September launch. That figure does not include additional players who accessed the game through Game Pass on PC and Xbox, which the studio describes as “millions more.”
Alongside these sales numbers, Team Cherry has announced what it is calling Silksong’s first major expansion, titled Sea of Sorrow. The expansion is currently planned to release sometime in 2026 and will be provided free to all owners of the base game. No specific launch window has been given, and the studio has indicated that further details will be shared closer to release, following a similar communication pattern to Silksong’s own launch.
Sea of Sorrow is described as a nautically themed expansion that continues Hornet’s journey. Team Cherry has confirmed that it will introduce new areas, additional bosses, and other gameplay content, though specifics remain limited for now. A brief teaser trailer accompanied the announcement, offering only a general sense of tone rather than concrete mechanics or narrative direction.
The announcement carries a certain historical symmetry. Silksong itself began life as a planned expansion for the original Hollow Knight before evolving into a standalone sequel. That context has led some players to temper expectations around timelines, especially given Team Cherry’s track record of extended development cycles. The studio has not addressed potential delays directly but has suggested that more information will surface when the expansion is closer to completion.
Beyond Silksong, Team Cherry also outlined continued support for the original Hollow Knight. A version for Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 is currently in development, and additional updates are planned across other platforms. These include ultra-wide monitor support on PC, bug fixes, and general technical improvements.
Taken together, the announcements suggest a studio focused less on rapid content turnover and more on long-term maintenance of its catalog. With Hollow Knight: Silksong sales remaining strong and a free expansion on the horizon, Team Cherry appears intent on extending the lifespan of its latest release while keeping its earlier work relevant across new hardware generations.
