Fans of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise are getting their first glimpse of Johnny Cage in the upcoming sequel, Mortal Kombat 2. A recently released poster on the official Mortal Kombat social media channels features Karl Urban, known for his role in The Boys, as the iconic character. The poster, designed as a movie advertisement, playfully highlights Cage’s fictional acting career.
The poster depicts Urban as Johnny Cage, sporting the character’s signature sunglasses and leather jacket. The mock movie poster advertises a film titled “Uncaged Fury,” presented by the fictional “Rebel Without a Cage” studio, a tongue-in-cheek nod to Cage’s in-universe persona as a Hollywood action star.
Johnny Cage, whose real name is Jonathan Carlton, is a popular character within the Mortal Kombat universe. A struggling actor seeking credibility, Cage enters the Mortal Kombat tournament and ultimately becomes a skilled warrior and defender of Earthrealm.
The role of Johnny Cage has been portrayed by several actors over the years. Linden Ashby played Cage in the 1995 Mortal Kombat film. Matt Mullins portrayed him in the 2010 fan-made short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and later in Mortal Kombat: Legacy season 1. Casper Van Dien took over the role in season 2 of Mortal Kombat: Legacy.
Johnny Cage was notably absent from the 2021 Mortal Kombat film, though his presence was teased at the end when Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is tasked with finding new fighters, passing by a poster of Cage.
Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the 2021 film, sees the return of several cast members, including Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion.
Joining the cast are Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.
Simon McQuoid returns to direct Mortal Kombat 2, with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. Warner Bros. is set to release the film on October 24, 2025.
