Mario Paint joins Nintendo Switch Online with full mouse support

Nintendo has added Mario Paint to its Nintendo Switch Online SNES library, bringing the 1992 classic to a new audience while keeping its signature mouse‑only controls intact. The title is fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2’s Joy‑Con mouse functionality, but original Switch owners aren’t left out—those using the first‑generation console can plug a compatible USB mouse into the dock to play.

Originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System alongside the SNES Mouse accessory, Mario Paint is best remembered for its simple but surprisingly versatile creative tools. Players can color in pre‑made designs, such as Mario and Yoshi, fill them with patterns, or start entirely from scratch. The game also includes an animation mode and a bug‑swatting mini‑game that tests mouse precision.

One of Mario Paint’s most enduring features, the music composer, also makes a return. Fans can arrange tunes using an assortment of playful sound effects, and a selection of Mario Paint tracks has been added to the Nintendo Music app for listening outside of gameplay.

Alongside the game’s arrival, Nintendo has updated the Nintendo Switch Online SNES app with control remapping, allowing players to customize button layouts. While the feature benefits accessibility across the entire SNES library, it’s especially welcome for users adapting to the mouse‑centric gameplay of Mario Paint.

For Nintendo, the addition highlights how the Switch Online service can offer more than just nostalgia. By supporting modern control options like Joy‑Con mouse input and USB peripherals, the company is making older games more accessible and relevant. For fans of Mario Paint, it’s a rare chance to revisit one of Nintendo’s most creative titles without digging out original hardware—or an aging SNES Mouse.
