When Niantic launched Pokémon Go a year ago, fans of the series took to the streets in a desperate bid to catch ‘em all. While the game included features such as PokéStops and Pokémon gyms to go along with the numerous kinds of Pokémon one had to catch, there was one glaring omission: Legendary Pokémon. Niantic has finally heard your anguished calls as the company has revealed that the coveted creatures are coming soon.

The Legendary Pokémon are part of Niantic’s massive update for the game, which brings cooperative raid battles and redesigned gyms. It’s through these Legendary Raids that players will be able to capture a Legendary Pokémon. Once a raid boss has been defeated, they’ll have an opportunity to capture the Legendary Pokémon on their own.
“As Trainers around the world go out and explore their neighbourhoods in search of Pokémon and Raid Battles, they can keep an eye out for unique Legendary Eggs appearing at Gyms. If Trainers and their team are able to successfully defeat a Legendary Raid Boss, they’ll have the opportunity to catch a Legendary Pokémon of their own! While Legendary Pokémon will help them take on the toughest Raid Bosses and Gym Battles, they’re not willing to leave their Trainer’s side, so they can’t be left to defend Gyms.”
The first such raid is expected to take place tomorrow, July 22, at Grant Park, Chicago during Pokémon GO Fest. The thousands of trainers at the event as well as millions around the world (it has an estimated 65 million monthly players) will work together to unlock in-game bonuses for the entire Pokémon GO community. If they manage to catch enough Pokémon during the Pokémon GO Fest Challenge Windows, the first Legendary Pokémon will be revealed in Grant Park. If the Trainers in Chicago succeed in defeating the Legendary Pokémon, that Pokémon will start appearing in Raid Battles around the world, after Pokémon GO Fest.
