Despite hosting its own separate show alongside E3, EA drew crowds to its EA Play Event with one of the highlights of this year’s event being Star Wars Battlefront II, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2015 Star Wars Battlefront.
Fans got their first glimpse of gameplay at the event, with a cinematic trailer featuring fan favourite Darth Maul and later, a 40-person match taking place in the prequel era—clone troopers versus battle droids on Naboo, complete with an appearance from Rey. The multiplayer facet of Star Wars Battlefront II will also feature the likes of Darth Maul, Yoda, Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker, and many more iconic (and feared) characters from all three cinematic eras. Furthermore, depending on the online mode you’re playing it, you’ll be able to face off heroes from the prequels trilogy, original trilogy, and new trilogy against one another in combat.
Multiplayer will allow up to 40 players simultaneously play together in a match, with players having a newly refined progression system, extensive hero customization abilities, and a larger arsenal of weapons with improved modification options. And of course, you’ll be able to pilot a variety of new starfighters in Space Battle scenarios and ride tauntauns across snow-covered fields.
In planetary engagements, you’ll be transported to some of Star Wars’ most iconic battlegrounds: Theed, Takodana, Starkiller Base, Yavin, Mos Eisley, Endor, Hoth, and more. You will also cooperate against AI foes in skirmishes that span the cinematic eras and engage enemies in entirely new modes.
Furthermore, EA has learned from their mistakes and are including a full-fledged campaign in Star Wars Battlefront II, something that the 2015 Battlefront was missing. In it, you play the role of Commander Iden Versio, leader of the Galactic Empire’s elite special forces unit, Inferno Squad. After witnessing the destruction of the second Death Star, Iden’s team embarks on an extraordinary odyssey of revenge, betrayal, and redemption spanning the 30-year gap between Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Along the way, she and her companions encounter a cast of Star Wars’ greatest characters. You’ll take control of many of these beloved heroes in an adventure ranging across a series of fantastic planets, including awe-inspiring settings you’ve never seen before.
Fans will be pleased to hear the direction that EA is taking this year in regards to DLCs. The first Battlefront II DLC will release at no additional charge with EA touting the fact that they wouldn’t want to immediately split the player base. Furthermore, the first season of updates will add Captain Phasma and Finn as playable characters. Both characters are from the new Star Wars movies.
You’ll be able to play Star Wars Battlefront II from November 9 if you are an EA Access or an Origin Access Member with the Play First Trial. You’ll be able to play from November 14 if you pre-order the Star Wars Battlefront II: Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition release. Lastly, the game will be available in the worldwide release from November 17.
