The Dota 2 The International is probably the most famous eSports competition to take place each and every year. Ever since its inception in 2011, The International has consistently raised its prize pool, thanks to the annual Battle Passes that are sold to fans of the game; a portion of the profits is added to the prize pool. As a result, this year’s prize pool easily surpassed the goal set by last year’s prize pool of $20,770,460.
It is possible that this year’s prize pool could exceed $21 million as there is still a month left for additional money to be raised. Dota 2 fans are incentivized to contribute to the prize pool by the Dota 2 Battle Pass. Every single year, the Battle Pass gives consumers unique cosmetics, in-game items, quests, and access to a new game mode this year: a co-op campaign called Siltbreaker. Furthermore, every year Valve also contributes $1.6 million to The International’s prize pool.
This year’s International is running from Aug. 7 to 12 in Seattle, featuring 18 of the best Dota 2 teams from around the world with winners being instantly transformed to millionaires overnight.
