Rumours suggest Capcom could revisit Resident Evil Code: Veronica

Rumours are once again circulating around Capcom’s long-running survival horror series, with Resident Evil Code: Veronica now emerging as a possible candidate for the franchise’s next major remake. While nothing has been confirmed by the publisher, several industry sources suggest that attention may be shifting away from Resident Evil 5 and toward a title that has long been discussed by fans as overdue for modernisation.

Speculation intensified following the release of the Resident Evil 4 remake in 2023, which was widely praised for updating a classic without discarding its identity. Since then, discussion has focused on what Capcom might revisit next, particularly as the company prepares to launch its next original entry, currently known as Requiem. Although Resident Evil 5 has often been cited as the obvious choice, recent commentary has cast doubt on that assumption.

Noted leaker Dusk Golem has claimed that a Resident Evil 5 remake is not planned for announcement this year, despite comments from Sheva Alomar voice actor Eva La Dare that fuelled expectations of a related reveal. According to Dusk Golem, the teased project is instead tied to Code: Veronica, originally released in 2000 as a Dreamcast exclusive before later ports and an expanded Code: Veronica X edition. The leaker has not offered direct evidence, but their past reporting on Resident Evil projects has proven accurate often enough to keep the rumour in circulation.

Code: Veronica occupies an unusual place in the series. Set after the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, it follows Claire Redfield’s search for her brother Chris, eventually shifting focus to Chris himself as the story expands across remote facilities and an Antarctic base. While the core gameplay adheres to the classic fixed-camera survival horror formula, the narrative significantly deepens the series’ lore, particularly around antagonist Albert Wesker and the Redfield siblings’ ongoing role in the broader story.

Despite being well regarded at launch, Code: Veronica has aged more noticeably than some of its peers, largely due to its camera system and presentation. A modern remake could address those limitations while preserving its narrative importance, potentially aligning it more closely with the recent remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4. From a continuity standpoint, revisiting Code: Veronica would also help bridge gaps between earlier and later entries for players who came to the series more recently.

For now, Capcom has made no public comment, and its near-term focus remains on upcoming releases rather than retrospective projects. Still, the possibility of a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake remains plausible, particularly given the company’s recent track record of revisiting key entries with a careful balance of nostalgia and modern design. Until an official announcement arrives, the rumour remains just that, but it is one that continues to gain traction.
