Nintendo has announced Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, bringing one of its most successful titles back into the spotlight with upgraded visuals, expanded online play, and new gameplay features tailored for the upcoming console. The enhanced version and a free update for existing Animal Crossing: New Horizons players will both launch on January 15, 2026, with preorders opening soon.
The Switch 2 Edition introduces several improvements that take advantage of the new hardware, including higher resolution graphics, smoother performance, and new input options such as mouse-style controls using the Joy-Con 2 controller. Nintendo also confirmed that online play has been expanded, suggesting larger or more seamless multiplayer interactions compared to the original Switch version.
Alongside the enhanced release, a free update will arrive for both Switch and Switch 2 players, adding fresh content for returning fans. The update includes a new resort hotel area, additional amiibo functionality, and new collaboration items, as well as improvements to online features. These additions appear to bring back some of the creative and social elements that defined the game’s early success during the pandemic era.

Players who already own Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the original Switch can purchase an upgrade pack to access the new Switch 2 Edition enhancements, a move that aligns with Nintendo’s gradual transition strategy between console generations.
The announcement marks the first major update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons since its 2021 content expansion, which many fans had assumed would be the game’s last. The title remains one of Nintendo’s biggest commercial hits, with over 48 million copies sold, making it the second best-selling game on the Switch after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Launched in March 2020 at the height of global lockdowns, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a cultural phenomenon, offering players a sense of social connection and creative escape. However, its post-launch support slowed considerably in the following years, leaving fans eager for renewed attention to the franchise.
Nintendo’s decision to revisit New Horizons signals both an acknowledgment of its enduring popularity and a potential bridge to future Animal Crossing projects on the Switch 2 platform. Whether this is a prelude to a full sequel or an extended revival of the original game remains to be seen, but it clearly reflects Nintendo’s intent to re-engage one of its most passionate communities.
