Sony marks PS5’s fifth anniversary with “It happens on PS5” global campaign

Sony Interactive Entertainment has launched a new global marketing campaign, “It Happens on PS5,” celebrating the fifth anniversary of the PlayStation 5 by highlighting the spontaneous and memorable moments that define players’ experiences on the console. The campaign aims to capture the sense of surprise and emotion that emerges from gameplay rather than promoting specific titles or features directly.

The campaign’s central theme focuses on the unpredictability of gaming — the moments that feel personal, cinematic, or entirely unplanned. The first wave of ads includes three short films titled The Greatest Stunt Jump Ever, The Unexpected Catch, and Everyday Problems in Extraordinary Vehicles. Each vignette dramatizes moments of discovery and humor drawn from the types of experiences players routinely share online, reflecting how gaming culture has evolved around community storytelling and shared reactions.

Sony’s approach extends beyond digital promotion. Between November and December, installations inspired by the campaign will appear in real-world locations across several countries. These include large-scale displays such as UFO landings in Australia, Spain, and Germany, as well as mysterious creatures appearing in Mexico, Italy, and the UK — physical nods to the imaginative and sometimes surreal experiences that “happen on PS5.”

According to Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the campaign draws from five years of fan engagement, where millions of players have posted videos and clips capturing their awe and excitement during gameplay. By framing the console as a platform for unexpected creativity and emotion, Sony aims to reinforce the PS5’s image not just as a piece of hardware but as a space where players create and share their own stories.

As PlayStation enters its next phase, this campaign signals a shift toward celebrating community moments rather than product specifications. It highlights the PS5’s cultural role — how it continues to inspire both developers and players in ways that go beyond traditional gaming milestones.
