Capcom is reportedly preparing to revisit another chapter of its survival horror legacy, with a remake of Resident Evil Zero said to be in development and targeting a 2028 release. The project, allegedly codenamed “Project Chamber,” appears to be moving through early production, with Guardians of the Galaxy video game actor Jon McLaren reportedly involved in a leading role.
According to a report from MP1st, Resident Evil Zero is expected to follow Capcom’s rumored remake of Resident Evil Code Veronica, which is said to be aiming for release in early 2027. McLaren’s online résumé lists “Project Chamber” as an upcoming AAA game being developed with performance capture at Beyond Capture Studios—the same Vancouver-based facility Capcom used for Resident Evil 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6. The codename’s reference to Rebecca Chambers, one of the franchise’s original protagonists, adds weight to speculation that this is indeed the long-rumored Zero remake.
Originally released in 2002 as a GameCube exclusive, Resident Evil Zero served as a prequel to the original Resident Evil, exploring the events that led to the viral outbreak in the Arklay Mountains. The game introduced a “partner zapping” mechanic, allowing players to switch between Rebecca Chambers and escaped convict Billy Coen to solve puzzles and manage resources. While atmospheric, the title’s design and limited inventory system divided players, making it a strong candidate for a modern reimagining.
If Capcom continues the pattern established with Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes, fans can likely expect expanded storylines, refined controls, and reworked environments built in the RE Engine. Reports suggest that the upcoming Zeroremake may also include new narrative material, including a deeper focus on the train conductor character and additional sequences meant to tie more directly into the broader Resident Evil timeline.
Capcom has yet to announce the project publicly, and an official reveal is unlikely soon given the 2028 release window. In the meantime, the studio is preparing for the February 2026 launch of Resident Evil Requiem, a title said to mark the franchise’s 30th anniversary and resolve several long-running storylines related to the Umbrella Corporation.
If the reports hold true, Resident Evil Zero will mark another step in Capcom’s ongoing effort to rebuild its classic catalog for modern audiences—part preservation, part reinvention.
