It’s been a busy week filled with announcements by Microsoft, who are currently holding their Build conference 2017, one of which involves Minecraft. The popular video game, which was acquired by Microsoft back in 2014 for $2.5 billion, is now available on the Nintendo Switch!
This isn’t the first console Minecraft has been released on, the first being the Xbox 360 and the most recent being the Wii U edition of the game. The Nintendo Switch version of the game is similar to that of the other consoles, containing the full game as well as the multiplayer mini-games, Battle and Tumble.
However, there will also be some unique Switch features such as four players playing together in a split-screen mode from a single console. Gamers can also flip out the Switch’s kickstand and play in tabletop mode, which supports split screen as well. On the other hand, up to eight players can play and build majestic castles together through the game’s multiplayer mode, or locally if everyone has a Switch.
Another unique Switch feature is the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. The pack comes with a custom crafted Mario-themed world, with all the mushrooms, man-eating plants and oversized plumbing you’d expect – and a texture pack to match. Furthermore, you can explore the whole world while listening to one of 15 tracks from Super Mario 64 and skinned up as one of 40 characters from Mario’s universe – Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, all the Koopalings, Wario and many more.
According to a post on the Minecraft website, the Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch will “run at a smooth 60fps and 720p resolution across all modes and play types, whether you’re playing on your TV or in handheld mode.” However, there is no mention of how demanding the game will be when it comes to battery life. Minecraft is available on the on the Nintendo eShop today, if you live in North America, and will roll out to Europe and Japan tomorrow.
