Hydroneer arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S six years after PC debut

Hydroneer is heading to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 8, 2026, marking six years since its original PC launch. Developed by UK-based studio Foulball Hangover, the mining and automation sandbox first arrived on Steam in May 2020 and gradually built a steady following within the crafting and base-building community. With more than one million copies sold on PC, Hydroneer has established itself as a durable presence in a niche that rewards experimentation and player-driven systems.

The upcoming Hydroneer PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release brings the full core experience to consoles for the first time. The console version retains the same hands-on mining loop that defined the PC edition. Players manually dig for raw resources, uncovering ore and gemstones that can be processed, smelted, and shaped into increasingly complex machinery. What distinguishes Hydroneer gameplay is its tactile, physics-driven approach. Rather than relying on menus and abstract resource counters, players physically transport materials, lay piping, and construct conveyor systems piece by piece.

Automation remains central to progression. Conveyor belts, drills, harvesters, and modular piping systems allow players to design expanding industrial operations. Over time, simple hand-dug plots can evolve into sprawling smelting facilities capable of extracting and refining resources at scale. The game’s open world includes multiple dig sites, NPC hubs, quest-givers, and in-game shops, giving structure to what is otherwise an open-ended engineering sandbox.

The PS5 and Xbox versions are being adapted with controller-focused interface changes, aiming to preserve system depth while making navigation and construction manageable from a gamepad. Hydroneer couch co-op will also be available on consoles, supporting up to four players working together locally on shared projects. In a genre often centered on solitary optimization, the inclusion of cooperative play remains a notable feature.

At launch, console players will also have access to the Journey to Volcalidus expansion, originally released in 2024. Sold separately, the add-on introduces a second map that is significantly larger than the original world. Set in the land of Volcalidus, the expansion adds lava-powered automation technology, new environmental challenges, and deeper mining systems. Players can rebuild the settlement of New Glade, gradually unlocking additional items and services as the town is restored. The colder biome and new machinery expand the late-game progression loop without altering the core formula.

Six years after its debut, Hydroneer’s console release reflects the continued demand for sandbox engineering games that emphasize systemic experimentation over scripted objectives. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launch broadens access to a title that has quietly maintained relevance in the automation sandbox genre, particularly among players looking for hands-on construction mechanics rather than streamlined crafting shortcuts.

Hydroneer arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S worldwide on May 8, 2026.
