NVIDIA says that they will be bringing their best selling GeForce GTX 980 desktop GPU to laptops. Yes, the same GPU that’s meant for desktops with no differences.

When we all go into LAN parties, we can’t imagine carrying bulky PC’s let alone massive desktop replacement notebooks to game with. Manufacturers have always been trying to find the right balance between portability and functionality. NVIDIA wants to change that and the impression that mobile gaming GPU’s aren’t as good as desktop level counterparts, we’ve seen this with the Geforce GTX 980M. Now, NVIDIA says that they will be bringing their best selling GeForce GTX 980 desktop GPU to laptops. Yes, the same GPU that’s meant for desktops with no differences.
It’s just a desktop GPU rebuilt in a notebook form factor so you’ll enjoy the same features most NVIDIA loyalists are well familiar with including, DSR, MFAA and VXGI, and future-proof support for DirectX 12 and Virtual Reality. The GTX 980 runs at a base 1.1GHz clock speed, with 2048 CUDA cores and 4GB of GDDR5 video memory (7 Gbps memory speed) with their Maxwell architecture means that you can easily and most definitely play all major titles over 60 fps on full settings.
Overclocking unlocked
You’re also going to be able to achieve “Surround gaming“. The GTX 980 will be able to run on three 1080p screens and is also Oculus VR compatible which is a win for VR developers wanting to take their work with them. Coupled with the new Intel Skylake CPUs that are identical to the desktop iteration, gamers are now seeing hardware come close to the PC on notebooks. That said, overclocking is going to be one of the key takeaways for gamers to even consider getting a performance based gaming laptop.
Nvidia has defined a system that will handle overclocking and deliver better performance. GTX gaming laptops now have a better cooling system that’s two times as better than their existing setup, plus you can manually tweak fan speeds letting enthusiasts push the limits of their system. That said, all of this sounds very premium and they’re only targeting the serious enthusiast. Six GeForce GTX 980 notebooks are being revealed, each redefining all expectations of the performance available in a form factor.
GeForce experience is packaged and it will be bundled by Nvidia software that lets you overclock the GPU. The laptops selected are the crème de la crème of mobile gaming including the MSI GT80 Titan which we had and the the insane monstrosity that is the ASUS ROG GX700 liquid cooled laptop boasting the GTX 980 and the list is only expected to grow.
