We all know how big Overwatch has become. Stating that fact at this point is redundant. The game became a goliath when it reached seven million players in the first week of launch. And now just three months after, Electronic Sports League (ESL) want to host the first-ever international Overwatch competition at Gamescom. The event will take place on August 20-21, with a prize pool of $100,000.
The event will host a total of eight teams – four from Europe and four from North America. The opening four qualifiers will begin on June 27, and will be hosted on ESL play. It isn’t surprising that Overwatch is getting the ESL treatment, after all, it’s game design was based around a competitive-team-play concept. It will be interesting to see how these competitions play out especially given how any game of Overwatch is nothing less than fast-paced and intense. According to ESL, further details about the competition will be announced later.
