Reddit AI search is now powered by Google: what you need to know

Reddit is enhancing its search capabilities with a new AI tool aimed at helping users get quicker, more relevant answers across its massive network of communities. Known as Reddit Answers, this chatbot-style search assistant is designed to streamline how users interact with over 100,000 subreddits by integrating Google’s Gemini AI through Google Cloud’s Vertex AI.

As Reddit becomes an increasingly common source for crowdsourced information, the company is adapting its platform to make search results more efficient and less cluttered. Instead of scrolling through threads manually, users can now ask direct questions and receive summarized responses, with links to related discussions and posts. These AI-driven answers aim to reflect the tone and insight typical of Reddit’s user base while surfacing discussions that might otherwise be buried.

The tool not only provides concise answers, but also highlights the communities where the information originated. This gives users additional context and avenues to explore further, especially if they’re interested in more than just a single reply. Follow-up questions and back-and-forth dialogue with the chatbot are also possible, making the experience more interactive.

Reddit’s collaboration with Google Cloud is part of a larger push to improve AI-driven tools on the platform. While the idea of AI-generated answers raises questions about accuracy, Reddit appears focused on maintaining the authenticity of its content. According to the platform’s leadership, early testing indicates a boost in relevance for search results, with users increasingly starting their information searches directly on Reddit via the new tool.

It’s worth noting that Reddit has had past involvement in shaping AI search indirectly—some of the AI-generated misinformation that made headlines in early AI search launches stemmed from misunderstood Reddit posts. This latest development is positioned to reduce such issues by drawing more responsibly from the platform’s own ecosystem.

Reddit initially introduced the concept of AI-powered results last year, and Reddit Answers marks a continued investment in that direction. For those who regularly rely on Reddit for advice, reviews, or general knowledge, this AI chatbot may significantly cut down the time spent sifting through posts.
