National Geographic is set to unveil the next chapter in its acclaimed documentary series with Lost Treasures of Arabia: The Nabataean Kingdom — a locally produced, 45‑minute film narrated in English by Academy Award‑nominated actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and in Arabic by Saudi journalist Weam Al Dakheel.
The documentary explores the remarkable Nabataean civilisation, famed for transforming the desert into a thriving hub through ingenious urban planning, water management, and control of vital trade routes. Audiences will journey through Petra (Jordan) and Hegra (Saudi Arabia), uncovering archaeological breakthroughs, including the first‑ever facial reconstruction of an ancient Nabataean woman.
Featuring regional experts like Saudi archaeologist Dhaifallah Altalhi, the film sheds light on the Nabataeans’ influence, their encounters with empires such as Egypt under Cleopatra and Rome, and the enduring mystery of Hegra’s decline.
Directed by Dirk Verheye and Inti Calfat, and executive produced by Iván Bouso and Rajul Chauhan in association with the Royal Commission for AlUla, the documentary is the second instalment in the Lost Treasures of Arabia series, following The Ancient City of Dadan.
