Nissan brings Patrol NISMO and Z NISMO to the UAE for its 40-year milestone

Nissan has marked 40 years of its performance arm, NISMO, by rolling out two regionally significant models for the Middle East: the all-new Patrol NISMO and the Z NISMO. While the anniversary itself traces back to a modest motorsports operation formed in Tokyo in 1984, the practical relevance for UAE buyers lies squarely in what these vehicles deliver on the road rather than the legacy behind the badge.

The Patrol NISMO is the more consequential of the two for this market. The Patrol has long been a staple SUV across the UAE, and this latest version represents a clear mechanical shift. The naturally aspirated engines of the past give way to a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6, producing close to 500 horsepower and up to 700Nm of torque when driven in its sportiest setting. According to Nissan, this makes it the most powerful production Patrol to date.

Beyond headline output figures, the Patrol NISMO has been developed with specific attention to GCC driving conditions. The suspension setup has been locally tuned, reflecting the realities of long highway stretches, urban traffic, and sustained high temperatures. Nissan also points to revised aerodynamics and structural adjustments intended to manage both cooling and stability when the vehicle is driven hard. This approach acknowledges that performance SUVs in the Middle East are often expected to balance daily usability with bursts of aggressive driving, something not always prioritised in other regions.

Alongside the Patrol sits the Z NISMO, aimed at a very different audience. This is a low-slung, two-door sports car designed primarily for driver engagement rather than practicality. It retains a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, delivering 420 horsepower and 520Nm of torque. Compared to the standard Z, the NISMO version places greater emphasis on aerodynamics, chassis rigidity, and a more focused cabin layout. The result is the fastest Z variant Nissan has produced so far, positioned to compete with established rivals such as the Toyota Supra in the regional performance coupe segment.

Both vehicles are now officially available across the Middle East, though UAE pricing has yet to be confirmed by dealers. Nissan has been clear about the importance of the region, noting that the first Patrol NISMO debuted here in 2015 before reaching other markets. That decision reflected sustained demand for high-performance SUVs in the Gulf, where size and power continue to carry cultural and practical weight.

NISMO’s broader philosophy has always been to transfer lessons from motorsport into production vehicles. Over the decades, this approach has shaped models ranging from the GT-R to limited-run performance editions. Whether the latest Patrol and Z fully live up to that promise in everyday conditions remains to be seen, particularly in terms of ride comfort, fuel consumption, and long-term durability. Road testing will ultimately determine how well these specifications translate to daily use in the UAE.
