Crunchyroll is adding another major Korean webcomic adaptation to its anime slate, with SSS-Class Revival Hunter scheduled to arrive in January 2027. The series enters territory that will immediately look familiar to Solo Leveling fans — hunters, rankings, dangerous dungeons and a protagonist starting near the bottom — but its central power mechanic gives the formula a considerably nastier edge.
The story follows Kim Gong-ja, an F-Class hunter consumed by envy of the more powerful people around him. He eventually obtains an S-rank ability capable of copying another person’s skill, although there is an inconvenient condition attached: Gong-ja can only copy the ability of someone who kills him.
That limitation becomes considerably more useful after he acquires another power that rewinds time by 24 hours whenever he dies. Death effectively becomes part of Gong-ja’s progression system, allowing him to exploit situations that would permanently end the career of practically anyone else. It’s a premise that combines the escalating hunter hierarchy associated with Solo Leveling with the repeated-death mechanics familiar from stories such as Re:Zero, while leaving plenty of room for the series to develop its own identity.
The anime also arrives as Korean webcomics continue expanding their presence in Japanese animation. Solo Leveling demonstrated just how large the international audience for these adaptations can become, making SSS-Class Revival Hunter an obvious candidate for attention. The comparison is useful, but reducing the new series to another Solo Leveling substitute risks overlooking one of its more interesting differences: Gong-ja’s journey places considerably more emphasis on the characters surrounding him.
That includes the Sword Emperor, a martial arts master whose ghost accompanies Gong-ja and serves as his mentor. Characters including the Black Witch and Heresy Inquisitor also play substantial roles as Gong-ja advances through increasingly dangerous challenges. That broader ensemble could help prevent the adaptation from becoming entirely dependent on watching its protagonist accumulate increasingly ridiculous abilities.
The bigger unknown is Studio fu. The relatively young studio has contributed second key animation to productions including Sakamoto Days and Dr. Stone: Science Future, but SSS-Class Revival Hunter represents a much larger test. Studio fu is headed by former Madhouse producer Fuminori Hara, whose credits include Death Note and Paprika, while Hiroaki Sakurai is directing. Sakurai is better known for titles including The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. and Maid Sama!, making this action-heavy fantasy project an interesting change of direction.
There is additional experience in character designer Takahiro Yoshimatsu, whose previous credits include Hunter x Hunter and Overlord. Still, pedigree doesn’t automatically guarantee production quality, particularly for a series likely to depend heavily on action and spectacle.
The initial teaser apparently isn’t enough to settle that question. With January 2027 already confirmed, the first substantial look at Studio fu’s animation may determine whether SSS-Class Revival Hunter feels like another beneficiary of the post-Solo Leveling rush or one of the adaptations capable of pushing the genre somewhere more interesting.
