Johnny Depp just reversed his Pirates of the Caribbean vow

Johnny Depp is no longer ruling out a return as Captain Jack Sparrow. In a recent interview, the actor said he would be willing to come back to Pirates of the Caribbean, though his reasons sound less like a career move and more like unfinished business.

Depp said his main interest would be giving the franchise a proper send-off, a better ending than the one it has now. That reads as a reference to Dead Men Tell No Tales, the 2017 entry that did well enough at the box office but left critics and many longtime fans cold. He also tied any return directly to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, saying he would work with him on anything and describing their relationship as a close friendship built on trust.

That condition is the most telling part of his answer. Depp has made it clear his loyalty sits with Bruckheimer, not with Disney. During his legal fight with Amber Heard, he said he would not make another Pirates film with the studio even for $300 million and a million alpacas. This is the first time he has publicly said otherwise since closing that door.

Bruckheimer, for his part, has been signalling for a while that a reunion was possible. He has said more than once that he has been talking with Depp about a sixth film and that a screenplay is being written. No deal is signed, though, and his comments have always been framed as hope rather than confirmation.

Disney has not been standing still either. A separate Pirates project led by Margot Robbie was in development, but it has shown no meaningful progress. That leaves the studio with an awkward choice. It can bet on a fresh lead in a series built almost entirely around one character, or bring back the actor it parted ways with.

Depp’s recent career adds weight to that choice. Since the Heard trial, he has largely stayed away from big studio blockbusters. He also stepped away from the Fantastic Beasts series after losing his libel case against The Sun, and Mads Mikkelsen took over the role of Grindelwald in what became that franchise’s final film. His next release is Ebenezer, a new version of A Christmas Carol, which opens on November 13.

None of this guarantees Jack Sparrow returns. Depp is clearly open to it, Bruckheimer has a script in progress, and only Disney’s answer is missing. The real question is whether the studio believes a sixth film needs Depp more than it needs a fresh start.
