Witch on the Holy Night gets a UAE release date

Few anime adaptations have taken as long to materialise as ufotable’s take on Witch on the Holy Night, and audiences in the UAE and Saudi Arabia now have a date to circle. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will bring the feature film to cinemas across both countries from January 21, 2027, and a new trailer has arrived carrying the film’s theme song, “Yoru to Ao,” performed by supercell.

The project is a significant one for TYPE-MOON fans. Witch on the Holy Night began life as a visual novel written by Kinoko Nasu, the creator whose work also spawned Fate/stay night and Tsukihime. Its Japanese release came in 2012, but the story stayed largely out of reach for English-speaking players until a remastered edition with an official localisation launched on consoles and PC in 2022. A film adaptation was confirmed back in 2021, so the wait has been long even by anime standards.

The story centres on Aoko Aozaki, a high school student who is secretly an apprentice Magician living in modern-day Japan. She shares a house with fellow practitioner Alice Kuonji, and her ambitions to become a fully fledged Magician are complicated when she crosses paths with a boy whose arrival sets the story in motion. Long-time TYPE-MOON readers will recognise Aoko’s name from cameos across the wider Nasuverse, which makes this effectively an origin story for one of the franchise’s most frequently referenced characters.

The choice of studio is arguably the biggest reason to pay attention. ufotable has a deep history with TYPE-MOON material, having produced Fate/Zero, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, the Heaven’s Feel film trilogy and the Garden of Sinners films. More recently, its Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle cemented the studio’s reputation for blockbuster-level action animation. Masaru Takeuchi directs.

Witch on the Holy Night, though, is a different beast from Demon Slayer. The source is known for its atmosphere, character drama and stylised presentation rather than nonstop combat, so it will be interesting to see how ufotable balances spectacle with the quieter tone that defined the visual novel. Condensing a lengthy branching-free narrative into a single theatrical film also raises fair questions about what might be trimmed.

Regional screenings will offer both Japanese audio with English subtitles and an English dub, a welcome option for local audiences. With anime films regularly performing well in Gulf cinemas lately, the release also signals how seriously distributors are now treating the region as a market for Japanese animation.
