ChatGPT dot can now text you first through iMessage and RCS

OpenAI is pulling its ChatGPT dot agent out of the ChatGPT app and into the place most people already spend their day: the messaging inbox. Dot, the proactive assistant designed to take on tasks and monitor things on a user’s behalf, can now be reached by text over iMessage and RCS, which means anyone with an iPhone or a modern Android device can talk to it from their default Messages app.

Until now, dot lived only inside ChatGPT on mobile, desktop and the web. That’s a reasonable home for a chatbot you open on purpose, but it’s an awkward one for an agent whose whole pitch is that it reaches out to you. An assistant that tracks something in the background and then pings you with an update makes more sense as a text thread than as one more app notification competing for attention.

The new texting option accepts written messages, photos and voice notes. Users can hand off a task or ask dot to keep watch on something, and it will reply proactively when it has relevant news. Turning it on takes a tap on dot’s profile and a selection of “Texting.” OpenAI says dot keeps the same context and plugins no matter where you reach it, so a conversation started in the app should carry over to Messages rather than starting cold.

Privacy is the obvious question when an AI agent lands in your messaging app, and OpenAI is addressing it up front. The company says enabling texting gives neither dot nor OpenAI access to your other conversations. That’s a meaningful assurance, though it remains a company statement rather than something independently verified, and users should treat it accordingly.

The more interesting implications sit at the edges. Because Messages is available on Apple Watch, this could become an unofficial route to ChatGPT dot on the wrist, something OpenAI hasn’t offered natively. Whether that works smoothly in practice is still unconfirmed. Voice notes also open a looser, more casual way to talk to the agent beyond its existing simulated calling feature.

This isn’t OpenAI’s first attempt to meet people outside its own app. It previously offered ChatGPT through a phone number and on WhatsApp, before Meta’s policy changes pushed general-purpose chatbots off that platform. Leaning on iMessage and RCS, standards that no single rival can easily shut off, looks like a lesson learned.

The bigger test is whether people actually want an AI agent sitting alongside texts from friends and family. If dot’s updates prove useful rather than noisy, messaging could become the default way people interact with AI agents, not just a convenient side door.
