Waddle World is Meta’s cutest attempt yet to keep you talking

Meta has a new idea for getting people to talk to its AI every day, and it involves a tiny pixel creature waiting for you to come back. The company has quietly released Waddle World, a free mobile app built around a virtual pet that chats with its owner and draws little doodles based on what the two of them talk about.

Anyone who grew up with a Tamagotchi in their pocket will recognise the setup. You hatch a pet in a 16-bit world, check in whenever you like, and it gradually learns about you. There are light mini-games, including stacking groceries and word puzzles, but the store listings make clear the gameplay isn’t the main point. Meta pitches Waddle World as a daily journal dressed up as a pet, and nudges users to speak to their creature rather than type.

The pitch is unusually relaxed for an app from a company whose platforms depend on engagement. Meta stresses there are no streaks, scores or pressure, which is a clear swipe at the guilt-driven design of Duolingo and Snapchat. Whether a Meta product can really avoid becoming a habit loop is another question, especially when a pet that misses you is itself a pretty strong reason to keep opening the app.

The rollout is small for now. Social media consultant Matt Navarra spotted the app, and it’s currently free and available only to adults in the Philippines. That fits how Meta often tests experimental products, quietly launching them in a few markets to see what works before deciding whether to expand. The company has done this before with its experimental apps team, and most of those projects never made it out of testing.

Waddle World also isn’t Meta’s only odd release. The company has launched Style Sketch, an AI fashion app that is reportedly limited to Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, though those restrictions haven’t been independently confirmed. Both arrive as Meta tries to give its Muse AI agent a friendlier image, complete with a mascot and small Charm gadgets.

The underlying strategy is easy to see. AI companions are becoming a real category, with Character.AI and Replika proving people will form ongoing relationships with chatbots. A cute pet is a much softer way into that space than a blank chat window.

What’s harder to ignore is the trade-off. A journaling app works because people share personal thoughts, and in this case they’d be sharing them with a company built on advertising. Meta hasn’t said whether either app will reach the US or other markets, and how it handles those conversations may decide whether Waddle World grows beyond an experiment.
