iPhone Duo sold out in under an hour, and buyers now wait months

Apple’s first foldable iPhone has hit its first real-world test, and the early signal is a long queue. Within an hour of iPhone Duo preorders opening at 8AM Eastern on Friday, shipping estimates on Apple’s online store had pushed out to late January 2027. That applies to every configuration, so changing the color or the storage tier won’t get anyone a shorter wait.

The obvious reading is that demand is outrunning supply, but the delay alone doesn’t tell us which side of that equation is doing the work. A three-month backlog could mean buyers rushed in, or it could mean Apple built a cautious first batch of a device that is much harder to manufacture than a slab phone. It is most likely some of both. Apple hasn’t said how many units it allocated to launch, so how deep the shortage really goes is still unknown.

Physical stores may be the better option. The iPhone Duo arrives in Apple Stores on October 23, and Apple normally keeps some inventory back for walk-in buyers. That isn’t a guarantee of stock on launch day, but anyone determined to get a Duo this year has better odds lining up in person than waiting on a delivery date.

The pricing makes the rush more notable. The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and comes in two finishes, star white and night sky. That is well above the iPhone lineup Apple has sold for years. Selling out that quickly at that price suggests that years of foldable skepticism among iPhone owners may have been less about the form factor and more about waiting for Apple to make one.

Apple has also arrived late on purpose. Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold launched in 2019, and Android makers have spent the years since working through hinge creases, durability complaints and awkward screen proportions. When Apple announced the Duo in September, it used the shorter, passport-style design Samsung brought to its own book-style foldable earlier this year. That layout aims to make the folded phone easier to use as a normal handset, which has been a recurring complaint about tall, narrow outer screens.
