Edifier’s $60 We-Bass earbuds tackle open-ear audio’s biggest weakness

Clip-on earbuds have gone from oddity to one of the busiest categories in personal audio, and Edifier is the latest brand trying to solve the format’s most persistent weakness. Its new We-Bass earbuds, now on sale in China through JD.com for 399 yuan (roughly $60), are built around a simple promise in the name: more low end than open-ear designs usually manage.

That problem is baked into the format. Clip-on earbuds hook onto the outer ear and sit outside the ear canal, which keeps you aware of your surroundings and avoids the pressure of in-ear tips. The tradeoff is that without a seal, bass tends to leak away and sound thin. Edifier’s answer combines 12mm long-stroke dynamic drivers with a bass compensation algorithm that adjusts low frequencies in real time, plus an acoustic chamber designed to aim sound toward the ear canal and reduce how much nearby people overhear. How well that software-assisted bass actually holds up is something only independent listening can confirm.

The fit relies on a flexible nickel-titanium alloy band that wraps around the ear. Edifier says it has survived more than 10,000 bending tests without losing shape, a claim worth taking with the usual caution since the company did the testing. The earbuds come in a single Wave White finish mixing matte and metallic surfaces, and an IP55 rating covers dust and water, with an app-based water-ejection tool for clearing moisture from the grilles.

Much of the spec sheet is aimed squarely at Chinese buyers. Voice assistance runs on ByteDance’s Doubao and DeepSeek AI models, alongside real-time translation across 21 languages in face-to-face and side-by-side modes. Call quality gets AI noise reduction and a wind-filtering algorithm rated for speeds up to 28 km/h, useful for a product many will wear while running or cycling.

Connectivity runs over Bluetooth 6.1 with multipoint pairing for two devices and a 50ms low-latency gaming mode. Battery life is the weakest point, at five hours per charge and 20 hours total with the case, which trails some rivals. Baseus, for instance, recently launched its MC2 NC clip-ons claiming up to 60 hours of total playback.

The broader picture is a crowded field. Bose helped legitimize premium clip-ons with its Ultra Open Earbuds, and Huawei’s FreeClip pushed the style further, while budget brands now flood the segment. At around $60, the We-Bass looks competitively priced, though there’s no word on a global launch, and its AI features may not carry over if it ever leaves China.
