YouTube Music will now expose AI-generated songs as you listen

YouTube Music is starting to tell listeners when the song playing in their ears wasn’t really made by a person. Beginning today, tracks identified as primarily created with generative AI will carry a visible label directly on the app’s Now Playing screen, putting disclosure in the one place almost every listener actually looks.

The badge sits just beneath the song title, beside the artist or channel name. It’s a small “AI” marker with an info icon, and tapping it opens a “How this was made” panel stating that the audio was altered or fully generated using AI, along with a link to more details. Google says the label applies when generative models handled core creative work such as composing the music and producing the vocals, rather than serving as a minor production aid.

To figure out which songs qualify, YouTube is relying on its own detection systems alongside input from music industry partners. The company hasn’t explained how accurate that detection is, how disputes will be handled, or precisely where the line falls for a track that is only “primarily” AI. Those gaps matter. A human artist who uses AI tools for part of a production could find themselves labeled, while carefully disguised synthetic tracks could slip past unnoticed.

The timing reflects a problem that has grown impossible for streaming services to ignore. Deezer recently said more than half of the tracks uploaded to its platform are now AI-generated, with around 90,000 such songs arriving every day. Much of that output exists to game recommendation systems and royalty payouts rather than to be enjoyed, and listener sentiment toward it appears to be souring.

Platforms are responding in very different ways. Spotify flags AI involvement on artist pages, which requires users to go looking. Deezer is preparing a toggle that removes AI-generated music from the listening experience entirely. YouTube Music’s approach lands somewhere in between. Labeling a song on the player screen is far more visible than burying the information on a profile page, but it stops short of letting listeners filter that content out of their recommendations altogether.

YouTube’s position is also more complicated than its rivals’. Google is investing heavily in generative AI, including music generation tools, so it has little incentive to discourage AI-made content outright. Transparency without restriction fits that balancing act neatly.

The labels will eventually expand to the main YouTube app, where music discovery happens at enormous scale. Whether a small badge is enough to change listening habits, or whether users will start demanding the option to skip AI tracks entirely, could shape how every major streaming service tackles synthetic music next.
