iOS 27 finally lets Spotify users skip saying “on Spotify” to Siri

For years, asking Siri to play something on an iPhone came with an unspoken tax for anyone who didn’t use Apple Music. Unless you tacked “on Spotify” onto the end of your request, Siri would usually default to Apple’s own service. With iOS 27, that small but persistent friction is finally going away.

Spotify now says its users can simply ask Siri for a song, album, podcast or audiobook and have it play in Spotify without naming the app. The change also covers looser requests, such as asking for workout music, and Spotify-specific features like its AI DJ. Voice requests can extend beyond playback too, including pulling up personalised recommendations, resuming a podcast, searching a saved library or generating one of Spotify’s AI-built Prompted Playlists.

The mechanism behind it matters more than the convenience. Rather than letting users pick a hard default music app in Settings, Siri now learns which audio service you rely on and routes requests there automatically. If Spotify is where you spend your listening time, Siri should eventually treat it as the go-to choice. That’s a quieter approach than a dedicated toggle, and it leaves some questions open, including how quickly Siri adapts and what happens for people who split their time between Spotify, Apple Music and other services.

Spotify gained Siri support back in iOS 13, but the requirement to name the app made it feel like a second-class option next to Apple Music. Removing it chips away at one of the subtler home-field advantages Apple has held over rival streaming services, an area that has drawn regulatory attention, most notably the European Commission’s €1.8 billion fine against Apple in 2024 over music streaming rules.

That context makes the geographic limits stand out. The feature is rolling out globally except in the EU, and neither company has explained the exclusion. It’s also tied to Apple Intelligence, which means it only works on an iPhone 15 Pro or newer with Apple Intelligence switched on. Owners of older iPhones, including the standard iPhone 15, are left saying “on Spotify” as before.

Spotify frames the update as making hands-free listening feel more natural, and in practice that’s a fair description of shaving a few words off every request. The bigger story is that Siri appears to be becoming more context-aware about user habits. If that preference-learning extends to podcasts, video or messaging apps, third-party developers could finally get something closer to equal footing with Apple’s own services on the iPhone.
