Google launches Fitbit Edge, its slimmest and smartest fitness tracker yet

Google has spent the past few years folding Fitbit into its own hardware and health ecosystem, and the Fitbit Edge is the clearest sign yet of where the brand now sits. Priced at $179.99 and available to pre-order ahead of its October 27 retail release, the new fitness tracker slots between the screenless Fitbit Air band and the Pixel Watch, giving Google a full ladder of wrist devices from minimal to fully featured.

The hardware story is about squeezing more into a slim tracker body. The Edge measures 11.5mm thick, uses a recycled aluminum case, and gets what Google calls its largest and brightest tracker display, with 46 percent more viewing area than earlier models. Google also claims the case is 45 percent lighter than the Apple Watch Series 12, which is a convenient comparison given the two products are not really chasing the same buyer. A physical side button returns for quick actions such as pausing a workout, a small but welcome concession for anyone who has fought a touchscreen with sweaty fingers.

Fitness tracking is notably broader than you would expect from a band. Built-in GPS, which Google says is up to 40 percent more accurate than previous generations, works without a phone, and an altimeter handles elevation. There are more than 50 workout modes with real-time guidance, and automatic detection for up to 100 activity types. Google Maps, media controls and notifications round things out, pushing the Edge closer to smartwatch territory than the Charge-style trackers Fitbit fans are used to.

The health suite is where scrutiny is warranted. Alongside ECG, continuous heart rate, skin temperature, HRV and sleep staging, the Edge supports Google’s Health Guardian features, including blood pressure trends and insulin resistance trends. These are trend signals rather than diagnoses, and Google has not detailed accuracy data here. More importantly, the AI-powered Health Coach that interprets those patterns sits behind a Google Health Premium subscription. Buyers get three months free, after which the smartest parts of the tracker cost extra each month, a model that has frustrated Fitbit owners before and puts the Edge closer to Whoop’s subscription-first philosophy than Garmin’s one-time purchase.

Battery life is rated at up to seven days, with a five-minute charge said to deliver a full day when the battery is low. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters. Perhaps the most interesting detail is that the Edge is Fitbit’s first repairable tracker, with a modular internal design and replaceable battery, addressing the most common reason fitness bands end up in drawers after two years.

It comes in Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon finishes, plus a $219.99 Stephen Curry edition. Middle East pricing and availability have not been announced.
