YouTube Music is quietly getting its biggest makeover in years

Google is quietly testing a new look for YouTube Music, and the change is aimed at the screens people open most often. A small group of users now see album and playlist pages where the cover artwork fills roughly the top third of the display, replacing the compact framed thumbnail the app has used for years.

Nobody can download this redesign yet. Users who received it shared screenshots on Reddit, and there is no matching app update, which suggests Google has turned the layout on remotely for selected accounts. This is how the company usually trials interface changes: show a new design to a slice of users, watch how they behave, and then decide whether to ship it, change it or quietly drop it.

On album pages, the cover now becomes a full-width backdrop behind the header. YouTube Music’s artist pages have used large header imagery for a while, so the update mostly makes album pages match them. The bigger change is underneath. The controls are now split into two clusters. Small circular buttons for downloading and saving to your library sit on the left, and a noticeably larger Play button sits on the right. The aim is clear: make starting playback the obvious action and keep the secondary options out of the way.

Playlists follow the same approach. The mosaic cover built from several album thumbnails now runs across the top of the screen. The left-hand cluster adds a comments button next to the download and library shortcuts, and Play again sits on the right. Shuffle gets its own dedicated button, taking the slot where the three-dot overflow menu used to be. That menu now sits at the top of the header, away from the playback controls.

Taken alone, these are small tweaks. Taken with Google’s recent experiments, they look like a larger plan. The company has already tested a split-screen Now Playing view and bigger full-screen album art, which suggests YouTube Music is being redesigned piece by piece rather than all at once. That would fit a service that has long felt like a functional extension of YouTube more than a music app with its own identity, especially next to rivals that have spent years refining artwork-led layouts.

The open question is whether more artwork helps or hurts on smaller phones, where a cover filling a third of the screen pushes the tracklist further down. Google hasn’t said when, or whether, the new layouts will reach everyone, so for now most subscribers will have to wait.
